Walford Town in disappointing collapse

Maidstone United's match against Walford Town will have been a meaningful one for Maidstone's Josh Rees as he was able to celebrate victory over his former club.

Maidstone captain Lee Worgan suffered the ignominy of scoring an unfortunate own goal in the 5th minute.

Young winger Keelan O'Connell then equalised for Maidstone in the 67th minute with a close range shot hitting the back of the net.

And it was the old Walford man Josh Rees who broke Wally's hearts by scoring the extra time winner on 98 minutes.

By then it was too much for Walford to try and get anything from the match.

Walford Town show lethal touch

Youth was certainly no match for experience on a wet afternoon at School Lane as a young Hungerford team succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of league leaders Walford Town.

Hungerford took the lead when forward Warren Bentley scored an incisive finish from 10 yards on 43 minutes.

Thurston Johnson then equalised for Walford Town in the 63rd minute with a close range finish.

Six of the best for Walford Town

The result flatters Walford, although the finishing shows that there is strength in depth for the Wally's.

With a disappointing crowd of just 344 at Silver Jubilee Park, the Walford Town fans that could be bothered to come celebrated an emphatic 6-1 victory over Hendon. This included a hat trick for bench warmer Matty McGinn.

But it was Hendon who took first blood, Henry Gough giving the Greens the lead after 39 minutes, and it stayed that until 69 minutes when Matty McGinn equalised, much to the relief of the Walford faithful, who must have been worrying that they were going to become victinms of a giant killing.

And so it went into extra time, which both clubs had agreed upon before kick off, Brodie Paterson certainly showed hi worth when he put Walford ahead straight after the extra time kick off.

Hendon heads went down and Thurston Johnson joined in the fun, scoring barely a minute after Paterson had.

Walford club captain Peter MacDonald then added to the lead after 104 minutes with McGinn working well from midfield to score inthe 113th minute and to add further insult to injury to Hendon knocking in a goal right at the end of the match to make it 6-1 to the Wally's.

Wally's win against Bath

There was a huge sigh of relief from the travelling Wally's fans after this match at Twerton Park as Walford Town finally got back on the road to winning matches after a dip in form, but they certainly didn't do it the easy way.

Experienced striker Thurston Johnson added to his tally of goals this season when he gave Walford Town the lead in the 33rd minute.

Bath equalised in the second half with young Joe White showing confidence and composure aplenty with a tidy finish in the 57th minute.

Winger Alireza Vahedi Nikbakht then put Town back in front after 77 minutes witha deflty eexcuted finish.

But Bath City equalised again when Rees Wedderburn put his shot into the bottom left corner with only 5 minutes to go and it looked like the points would be shared.

But in injury time from a corner, the ball bounced off Bath's Andy Watkin's head and past the keeper for Walford to take all three points.

They say that for a team to win the league they need some luck along the way...well this was certainly a day of luck for the Wally's.

Walford Town fail to convert changes

In the Vanarama match of the day, where 1st placed Walford took on 2nd place Hampton & Richmond, it was H&R who took the three points in a somewhat surprising result.

The Wally's were still smarting over their FA Cup defeat to Swindon Town the week before, and it seemed that the hangover continue on a little bit longer.

Things turned sour for the Wally's when veteran centre back Siphiwe Mkhonza earned himself an early bath for continously fouling on 57 minutes.
Defensive forward Jason Williams gave Hampton the lead with an accuratley placed shot in the 65th minute.

Williams then added his second of the afternoon witha close range strike on 68 minutes.

Wright scored with 20 yards in the 78th minute to further the lead and Williams completed the demolition with his well deserved hat trick on 80 minutes.

Walford are still top tonight but now only by goal difference with Hampton & Richmond ready to take advantage of any more Wally's mishaps.

Swindon Town enjoyed a comfortable 3-1 victory over Walford Town.

Jamal Salim Magoola facing unxcertain future at Walford after row with Graham Dillon

The long term future of Jamal Salim Magoola's Walford Town career is in doubt today following reports of a row with Walford manager Graham Dillon.

Reports from the School Lane dressing room suggest that Magoola approached Dillon to ask for a move away from Walford to find regular football and was left angered by his manager's refusal to sanction such a move.

The reaction of some of Magoola's team mates has the potential to cause a further headache to Dillon with a handful of players reported to be unhappy with the way the goalkeeper has handled the situation.

Whilst the manager will be pleased to have the support of some of the players, the news that a handful of key players including star attacking midfielder Brodie Paterson are siding with Magoola will be a concern to Dillon as he attempts to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Comfortable 4-1 win for the Wally's

Walford Town produced a good display this afternoon to see off the challenge of Witham Town at Spa Road.

Experienced midfielder Brian Howard then added to the lead for a deftly executed finish on 82 minutes.

An error from Walford Town's Sam long allowed forward Glen nelson to score a close range finish into the bottom left corner.

Wallys hire new manager

Walford Town have hired a new manager after the departure of Keith Rutter.
The new man in charge of the Wally's will be Graham Dillon, the former Walford central defender.
And Graham has already made a bold move which has not gone done well with the Walford board.

"As Walford have finally reached their lowest ebb, what with the relegation of the club down to the National League South, I have decided to get rid of all playing staff associated with the club. The current players here are associated with the relegation and I feel that to keep people on who have experienced this do not have the right frame of mind to stay with the club", explains Dillon.
"So I want to bring in all new players as well my own coaching team, including a director of football, who will be able to take some of the managing tasks away from me, so that I can purely concentrate on the footballing side of things."

Walford Town FC History

Walford Town Football Club History

The first football club that was known in the Walford area was known as Walford Corinthians, founded in 1895.

But without any decent organisation within the club, the club became disbanded in 1898.
In 1900 the Reverend Ismael Gabson noticed that the youth in the area of Walford were in need of organisation and fitness, and felt that they needed a place to call their own and where they could learn sports such as rugby, cricket and association football.

So he set up a hut in a field near Bridge Street where the youth of the area could go and soon enough, Walford Town Football Club were formed.

After a series of friendly matches against other local youth clubs and factory teams, Walford developed a senior side which entered the London League Division Two in time for the start of the 1902/03 season. They finished 8th out of 14 teams.

Walford Town, nicknamed the "Dockers" at the time, initially wore red shirts, with black knickers and socks.

Walford Town gained promotion to the First Division in 1913, and were due to start in August 1914 but the first World War soon put a stop to that when football was stopped and 18 of the 22 members of Walford Town FC went to war, only 5 returned, including Woodstock "Woody" Jodley, who returned from the front minus an arm. This however, never stopped him from playing as a forward.

After the war some football teams were unable to re-form in time for the new football season of 1918/19. This gave Walford Town an opportunity to gain a "promotion of sorts" and entered the Southern League.

In 1920, virtually the entire top division of the Southern League was absorbed by the Football League to become that league's new Third Division. A year later the Third Division was expanded and regionalised. The Third Division clubs from the previous season became the Third Division South, with the addition of the Third Division North.

Walford Town were always a team that managed to finish mid table at best, their highest placing was an 8th placed finish in 1932/33.

In 1936 the club moved from Bridge Street, which was redeveloped to make way for a new railway line.
The club had two local businessmen, Mr William Hibbard and Mr Oliver Ragwell, who put forward enough money to help build a new ground in School Lane, based just on the south side over the canal.
In 1940, the ground was hit by a cluster of bombs during the blitz, and some incendiary bombs burned half of the main stand down but the ground was deemed suitable to play on by 1947.

For the 1958/59 season, the Football Association changed the format so that Southern and Northern teams could play each other, the top eleven teams in both previous Third Division's North and South would form the Third Division, while the teams from both previous divisions that finished below eleventh would form the new Fourth Division.

As Walford finished that final season in Division Three South in 14th position, they were to enter the Fourth Division.

This would also be the season that the clubs colours would change from the red and black hoops that they were well known for, to be changed completely to an all blue kit.

This caused virtual riots in Walford, where the majority of fans refused to acknowledge the change and went their own way to form a breakaway club, Walford Dockers FC, in relation to their original nickname (Watford Dockers played in the Athenian league until they were disbanded in 1968).

Because of this, the chairman of Walford Town, whose decision it was to announce the change of colours, Mr Ken Nafferton, also decreed that the nickname of the club would no longer be "The Dockers", but the "Blues" or "Town".
As time went by and the club's fortunes continued to get to no better, another nickname developed, "The Wallys", and not just because of the name of the town!

2004/05 became the worst season of the club's history when, after winning only 5 of their 46 league matches, Walford Town were relegated during the first season where automatic relegation was given to the last two clubs in the Division (now called League Two since 1992).

The teams to replace them would come from the Conference (now named the National league) and Walford would leave the Football league.

Before 1992 the two bottom teams would have to apply for re-election, where the chairmen of the remaining Football league clubs would vote to keep the club in.

Most of the time this would be accepted easily, and Walford Town had had to apply 6 times in the past to be re-elected, but this season there was no escape.

Walford's first season in the Football Conference was relatively regarded as a success, although promotion was not achieved, they finished fourth and lost in the semi-final play-offs, only one game from the final and a chance of promotion.

Season's after that were not as successful, and 2015/16 saw Walford Town finally slip out of the National league and into the National League South for the first time ever.

If Walford Town were not known for their league prowess, they were certainly not known for their cup exploits either.

In the Amateur Cup, the furthest Walford ever reached was the 2nd round proper  in 1911/12, losing to Walthamstow Avenue 3-0.

The FA Cup saw the same round when they lost to Clapton Orient 8-0 in 1932/33 and Reading 6-2 in 1966/67.

And in the FA Trophy, Walford's best season was in 2008/09 where they reached the dizzy heights of the 3rd round proper, losing against Harrogate Town 2-1.

Welcome to Walford Town Football Club

Feel free to call me crazy, weird, or just plain sad, but I've always wondered why on Eastenders, they haven't mentioned the local football team, Walford Town FC more.

When Eastenders started, Arthur Fowler seemed to be the only fan, wearing his blue and white scarf, and selling scratchcard tickets for the club. He mentioned the "Wallys" and I believe that they were in the old Division Four at the time (1985).

When he was committed into a mental hospital, his daughter Michelle would let him know how his club were getting on.

Aiden Maguire was later in Eastenders, who was supposed to be a new player to the club, but then nothing else was really mentioned about the local club and they seemed to fizzle out of Eastenders entirely.

So, I thought, with the help of Football Manager 2018 (FM18), where you can choose to name a club and play it on FM18 as manager, that I would set up Walford Town FC from scratch.

I have made a Youtube channel called Walford Town FC where highlights will be able to be shown, and a blog where I plan to write (copy from FM18!!)) the match reports from every match.

The lowest league I can start in will be the National League South, so that is where I will start.

I have also made up some history of this fantasy football club...yes I do have more time on my hands that I should have!!

Who knows, if it kicks off, maybe I will even do a match programme...now that really would be sad wouldn't it!!!
